Each cloud contains between 30 to 150 tags, or words. The different font sizes represent the importance of the word, as well as its quantity. Other visual cues, such as color, may be used to represent the different weights of the words. Tag Clouds are able to represent more weights than other forms of measure. Histogram or pie charts can only represent an average of 12 weights. Tags within the cloud may also be hyperlinks that will open to more information.

Brief History:

Educational Value:

Hand helds

Definition:

HandHelds - something small enough to be used or operated while held in the hand or hands.

Cell Phone - a mobile telephone system using low-powered radio transmitters, with each transmitter covering a distinct geographical area (cell), and computer equipment to switch a call from one area to another, thus enabling large-scale car or portable phone service.

IPOD- a palm-sized, electronic device primarily created to play music. Unlike a traditional Walkman or portable CD-player, the iPod is capable of storing a large number of tracks and playing for many, many hours on a single battery charge.

History of Cell Phone: In 1973 - Dr. Melvin Cooper set up a base station in New York with the first working prototype of a cellular telephone, the Motorola Dyna-Tac. Mr. Cooper and Motorola took the phone technology to New York to show the public. In 1979 cell phones go public. Public cell phone testing began. The city of Chicago was where the first trials began with 2000 customers, and eventually other cell phone trials appeared in the Washington D.C. and Baltimore area. Japan began testing cellular phone service in 1979. The first PDA/Phone combination was produced by BellSouth/IBM in 1992. The first touch screen phone was the the Ericsson R380 in 2000. It had a black and white touch screen and it featured a new flip design. The first colored phones were produced in 2002. Between 2000-2005 features suck as: GPS, web browsing, full screens, sliders, picture capabilities, video, interchangeable skins, and full Internet capabilities. Also, the Blackberry, that was invented in 2004, became the tool of choice for businesses and business people everywhere. Today cell phones come in every shape and size. From simple candy bar shaped and flip phones to Blackberries and Netbooks, it seems that no one functions without some form of cellular device.

History of IPOD:In 2000, digital music players were either big and clunky or small and useless with equally terrible user interfaces. Apple (Steve Jobs) saw the opportunity and announced the release of the iPod, their first portable music player on October 23, 2001. People's reaction to the Ipod at first was not so great. Their biggest complaint was the $400 price tag. Consumers also complained about the wheel design. It was something, in 2001, that people were not use to using for browsing. Today the wheel design is a common design. Today there are several types of Ipods including: Video Ipod, Ipod Mini, Ipod Touch, Ipod Shuffle, and the Iphone.

Features:

Cell Phone: have lots of useful features that could be utilized in the classroom.

stopwatch

calender

Internet

email

the ability to listen to music/podcast

the ability to take pictures/ make videos

the ability to watch videos

GPS mapping

World clock

calculator

IPOD:

ability to listen to music/podcasts

ability to watch video

internet access

ability to view photo

calendar/planner

world clock

ability to download and use "apps"

Educational Value:
Cell Phones:
Cell phones give the students access to information at the palm of their hands. They no longer need to travel to the computer lab, take turns at the classroom computer, or go to the public library to gather information. Cell phones make it easier for both the teacher and the student. Cell phones can engage and enthuse students in their learning. The students can understand the value of technology and feel comfortable in using it to learn.

Ideas for teachers:

Group work - the students could work together using their cell phones to collect video clips on ways to be more environmentally friendly.

For students with autism - the teacher can use the cell phone to allow the students to listen to music to calm them down. The teacher can also use the music as a reward for the students finishing their work.

Individual work - the students will use their cell phones and headphones for this activity. The teacher could text the students a link to watch and pass out a worksheet with questions. She could have the students watch the video and answer the questions on the worksheet.

Ipod:

1. Apps with educational games

2. Be able to listen to music and podcasts that are related to curriculum--may help with memorization

3. Students can use to keep organized

In Class Activity
<a class="external" href="http://sprouseinnovations.wetpaint.comhttp://www.polleverywhere.com/multiple_choice_polls/LTY3ODI3NTM2MA"
Ideas:
1. Vlogging- video blogging
2. Twitter
3. Wordpress/blogspot

Definition: a website usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other materials such as graphics or videos; a contraction of the term "web-log".

History:

Blogging- It's hard to believe, but the first blog went out in 1993. It was done using Mosaic, which compiled links and codes. However, it was in 1998 that blogging began to really take off. By 1999 and 2000, blogging had taken to the entire world wide web, but at the beginning, only the developers could make personal encodings for the blogs. Once blogging went public and anyone could do it, personal links were created so that the bloggers could make their pages their own, as well as making it so that others could find their pages and read what was posted. Blog spots like www.blogger.com and www.wordpress.com are two main sites were bloggers often go.

Twitter- Work on the project started on March 31, 2006. @Jack is Jack Dorsey, who was the Ceo until recently. Originally, it was known as Twttr.

Twitter has been around for over three years. Twitter was founded by Biz Stone, Jack Dorsey, and Evan Williams, and was unknown to many until the 2008 presidential election — which catapulted it to stardom.

From the geeks, to the election, to celeb involvement and now the general public (there are currently around six million registered Twitter users), Twitter's popularity is certainly soaring.

http://www.manolith.com/2009/06/21/the-story-so-far-of-twitter/

Key Features:

Twitter- Because Twitter uses 140 characters or less to tell what is happening or what you are doing, it cuts out long statuses. It keeps people informed of current events without getting lengthy. It is also a good way to keep up with celebrities, politicians, and also friends. Due to the fact that tweets can be sent to your phone, it makes it highly mobile.

Blogging- All bloggers will find that when they start, they can create a theme for their blog. They will also find that unlike Twitter, longer posts can be made, often resulting in no character or word restrictions. Most bloggers tend to stick to their themes, but they can deviate if they choose. When a new user signs up fo blogging, which ever blog site he has chosen will have set instructions to getting started, making it easier for the user to slide right on into blogging. The more a person posts, the more readership he can gain. Readership can help the blogger in popularity with what he posts.

Educational Value – How can it be used in the classroom?

Twitter- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OxIz_3o3O0

Twitter can take many technologies that teachers currently use, such as listserv and emails, and turn it into one. The updates can be used to remind students or tests, make an announcment, or a way to quickly cancel class. Because Twitter updates can be sent to your mobile phone, news travels faster and a computer is not necessary to find out class information. There are many other applications that can be used along with Twitter. PollDaddy can be used to get a quick and effective poll of fellow classmates. Students and teachers can also follow politicians, keep up with current events or news stories with sources such as @CNNMoney.

Blogging- Many think that blogging cannot be encorporated into a classroom setting, but one site, created for teacher use, has come up with many reasons why a blog is helpful in classrooms. Here are a few ways that Edublogs.org has encorporated blogging into classrooms:

- Post materials and resources
- Host online discussions
- Create a class publication
- Replace newsletters
- Share lesson plans
- Give/get feedback

Other ways blogging can be benificial in the classroom is for teachers to blog about what was talked about in class that day for students who were absent, may need a reminder about assignments or tests that are coming up, or for students who just want to recap on what was said in class. Also, teachers can use blogging as an assignment. Assignments for blogging can either be long term or short term. One way a teacher could use a blog is as a feedback journal. Instead of asking the students to write in a journal about what the understand or didn't understan about a lesson, they can ask them to do so online, which helps with organization for the teacher. Plus, it helps with giving easy feedback to the students, and for the teacher.

Resources for Future Learning - Provide 3 digital resources (URLs) such as tutorials, templates, software downloads, etc. which will assist classmates to independently learn the new technology at a later date.

Twitter- http://help.twitter.com/portal

Blogging- http://www.ehow.com/how_2032323_blog.html

Future Teaching - Provide 5 URLs that support classmates using the innovation for future teaching in a variety of situations (e.g., lessons, handouts, articles).

Twitter- http://academhack.outsidethetext.com/home/2008/twitter-for-academia/

http://makingconnectionsfye1220.wordpress.com/2008/09/09/assignment-48-hours-of-twitter/

Blogging- www.educblogs.org (for teachers)

http://bgenglish.blogspot.com/2008/01/short-story-blog-assignment-comment.html (an example of an assignment that could be done using blogs)

VLOGGING

Definition- Video blogging, sometimes shortened to vlogging or vidblogging is a form of blogging for which the medium is video, and is a form of internet television. Entries are made regularly and often combine embedded video or a video link with supporting text and images. Entries can be recorded in one take or cut into multiple parts.

Brief History- Blogging was initiated in 2005 in conjunction with the founding of YouTube, the world’s largest and most commonly used video blogging site.

Key Features- Vlogging helps you to not only express your feelings as you normally would through writing but through actual live video expression. It is used to crop and touch up photos, as well as organize them into albums and slide shows. Photo editors typically do not have the myriad filters and features of a full-blown image editor such as Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. However, they include a basic set of tools that is sufficient for most consumers. Types of Photo Sharing and Editing: 1. Picnik 2. Picasa 3. Paint History of Photo Editing and Sharing: Photo editing started out with just a traditional retouching. Before computers, retouching was done with paint or ink. The first recorded case ofphoto editing is from the 1860s. It was a photo with Abraham Lincoln's head on John C. Calhoun's body. This picture was the basis for the original five dollar bill. In the 1980s, Quantel computers was the first to come out with a digital photo editing program, Paintbox. Key Features: 1. Selection- One is able to edit a certain part of a picture without editing the entire picture. 2. Layers- 3. Image Size Alteration- Often referred to as image scaling, the editor is able to change the size of a picture by making it smaller or larger 4. Cropping an Image- Creates a new image, the editor can select a portion of a picture and the rest is discarded. 5. Histogram- The editor can take an image and make an image histogram. The pixels an image contains (vertical axis) and the brightness value (horizontal axis) make up the histogram. This will allow the editor to adjust the brightness of each pixel. 6. Noise reduction- Allows the editor to create a clearer image, an example is when an image is taken in a low light setting. 7. Removal of Unwanted Elements- The editor can remove objects that take away from the main focus of the picture. 8. Selective Color Change- The editor can change the color of a specific object in a picture. 9. Image Orientation- The image can be rotated, mirrored, flipped, flopped, etc. 10. Perspective Correction and Distortion- Changes the shape of an image that was taken at a weird angle. 11. Lens Correction- The editor can edit an image using several lens distortions. Example: fisheye. 12.Sharpening and Softening Images- One can sharpen an image or blur it. 13. Special Effects- Depending on the software being used, there is usually a variety of special effects that can be added to an image to create unusual results. Educational Value: 1. Digital Storytelling: Words can be added to an image. 2. Students can edit photos for the school yearbook. 3. English students who are writing short stories can add a creative picture. 4. Elementary students can create their own photobook. 5. Students can edit photos for their school website. 6. When students are learning to write letters, they can create a postcard. 7. Students can add captions to their photos that will help improve grammar and sentence structure. 8. Students can edit a photo of themselves and learn the importance of using a professional photo on a resume. Resources for Future Learning: Future Teaching: This shows teachers how to use picnik with a Smart board: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgCeYtyZPec This gives teachers an example of lesson plans using picnik: http://wiki.itap.purdue.edu/display/INSITE/Picnik

  Definition

  Brief History

  Key Features

Educational Value – How can it be used in the classroom?

Resources for Future Learning - Provide 3 digital resources (URLs) such as tutorials, templates, software downloads, etc. which will assist classmates to independently learn the new technology at a later date

Future Teaching - Provide 5 URLs that support classmates using the innovation for future teaching in a variety of situations (e.g., lessons, handouts, articles).

Paint.net
1. Definition - Paint.net is a free photo editing system that runs on windows programs and has many effects and special features to enhance photos.
2. Brief History - It started as a Washington State University senior design project and is now kept up by the alumni that originally worked on it. It was originally designed to replace the paint that is on every windows computer now.
3. Key features - The site is set up so the user can learn it very easily. It uses tab document interface, which the program uses a live active thumbnail (smaller version of your picture) in the window.
4. Educational value - Paint.net can be used to edit photos and create their own pictures to express what they see in what they are analyzing. For example, to make pictures from what they imagine in the books they are reading.
5.
6.
http://www.getpaint.net/

Websites found:
http://www.leasttern.com/teacher/lessonplans.html#sharing

http://teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=121380&title=Online_Photo_Sharing_in_Plain_English

http://www.snapfish.com/snapfishinschools

http://wiki.itap.purdue.edu/display/INSITE/Picnik

Picnik is a free site which allows you access the basics to alter images. For a more in depth atleration service, individuals must pay S24.95 a year. This "Premium Package" allows for the use of a more extensive selection of photo editing/atlering software.
To download Picnik, follow this link: www.picnik.com and get started!

Picasa is another free photo editing website. It is accessed through google, and has many of the same features as picnik. The layout is slightly different, but the alteration process is very much the same. Picasa can be found by typing "Picasa" into the Google search bar, or going to: http://picasa.google.com/

Educational Value: Depending on the subject, these photo editing sites can be of great use in the classroom. An English class, for example, could use the software to alter an image as a way of creating a book cover, book to movie poster, or making themselves look somewhat like a character from a book or a different time period. Pictures can have so many alterations done that the possibilities are many.

Sprouse 275 Technology Innovations Home
Garageband
Definition- Program used for learning to play the piano and guitar and for creating music and podcasts. The program was announced at the Macworld Conference and Expo in San Francisco in January of 2004. Singer/songwriter John Mayer assisted with its demonstration

  Key Features-

  Audio recording

  Virtual software instruments

  Virtual music lessons

  MIDI editing

  Podcasts

Educational Value –

  Cross-addressing subjects

  Hands-on activity

  Fosters group work

  Fosters student/teacher connection

  Enables and enhances student creativity

It’s trendy-students will WANT to do it!

Resources for Future Learning - the following links are two tutorials that will walk you through the process of creating a podcast:

1. http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#garageband-podcast

2. http://mac.appstorm.net/how-to/music/creating-a-podcast-using-garageband/

3. http://www.voiceovertimes.com/2008/01/04/10-tips-for-editing-a-podcast-in-garageband/

We hope these links aid in the process of becoming more familiar with this innovation :-)

Future Teaching - the following links are AMAZING lesson plans that are categorized by subject area. Search for your subject area to see how relevant Garageband can be!

*Reading Fluency*
In elementary classroom, GarageBand can be used to help strengthen reading fluency. The students can record themselves reading text with a voice recorder and then edit the content in the GarageBand. This allows the students to listen to themselves later for a self-evaluation. Also, by recording the students’ readings and saving them, the teacher can go back and listen to the reading later. This can help with time constraint in the classroom since it can be difficult to see all of the students in a timely fashion. You can also use the readings to show the growth of the students reading fluency throughout the year. Here is an example of using GarageBand to create podcasts to assist with reading fluency: http://edcommunity.apple.com/ali/story.php?itemID=10804

*Presentations*
Students can use GarageBand to create presentations. The students can include models, tables, or diagrams throughout the presentation to support their information. This can give the students a chance to give more life to their reports. They can make reference to pictures or documents during their presentation and have them show in their podcast. The presentation can be a personal narrative or a report for history. Podcasts would allow the students to provide pictorial support along side their oral presentation. Here is an example of a family tradition report form first grade: http://edcommunity.apple.com/ali/item.php?itemID=10581

*Creative Writing* Students can present their creative writings as a podcast, using GarageBand. The writing can be accompanied by jingles, sound effects, or music to help the students express their creativity. The students can also take original pictures or draw illustrations to add to the podcast through GarageBand. Here is an example of a five sense creative writing project: http://edcommunity.apple.com/ali/story.php?itemID=14031 *Studying Tools Through Raps* GarageBand can also be used to record raps or songs the students created. This can be very useful as a studying tool. Creating a rap or song can assist the students in retaining information. And by recording the rap or song onto a podcast through GarageBand, students can review the song later if they had forgotten it. Students creating a song or rap is a powerful study tool. Here is an example of a rap song about Ancient Egyptian music: http://edcommunity.apple.com/ali/story.php?itemID=300

Mini-Teach Group 3: Garageband

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

Social Bookmarking.

Social Bookmarking Definition
Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to share, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web resources. Unlike file sharing, the resources themselves aren't shared, merely bookmarks that reference them. In a social bookmarking system, users save links to web pages that they want to remember and/or share. These bookmarks are usually public, and can be saved privately, shared only with specified people or groups, shared only inside certain networks, or another combination of public and private domains. The allowed people can usually view these bookmarks chronologically, by category or tags, or via a search engine.

Features
The social bookmarking system has several advantages to it over the traditional search engine or a wiki. The people who use and create the Internet resources for the tags are human beings who know what they are doing and talking about when it comes to giving the information. This way the sources are reliable rather than in something like Wikipedia where anyone can go in to edit. The allowed people can view these bookmarks in chronological order, in specific categories, or with a search engine and can also view any shared bookmarks with other users. Also, the social bookmarking system can give a rank to a resource based on how many times it has been bookmarked/saved by users in order to help decide which information is better.

History
Social bookmarking was first seen in 1996 when itLists.com was the first site to use the concept of shared bookmarking followed by other companies such as Backflip, Blink, Clip2, Hotlinks and Quiver. These companies however failed to make an impact on the market due to the dot com crash of 2001. We then had to wait until 2003 when del.icio.us launched its own tag related social bookmarking

Education Advantages

- Gives students reliable resources to choose from.

- Has links and information in a chronological order for easy access.

- Any student is able to pick, organize, and share websites.

- Teachers and students are able to collaborate on projects with other schools, students, and teachers sharing the bookmarks between participating communities of users.

The term "digital storytelling" arises from a movement that uses new digital tools to assist individuals to express their life experiences in an emotionally engaging manner. Digital stories typically assume the form of short stories approximately eight minutes or less and usually involve interaction with the audience. The term also refers to the variety of emergent forms of digital narratives such as web-based stories, interactive stories, hypertexts, and narrative computer games. Digital stories are widely respected for their emphasis on personal voice and facilitative teaching methods.

A Brief History:
The Center for Digital Storytelling (CDS) was founded in the early 1990's in San Francisco Bay, California. Dana Atchely, a media producer and artist, created a multimedia autobiography. He collaborated with Joe Lambert and Nina Mullen, and together they formed the San Francisco Digital Media Center (SFDMC). Together they realized the importance and impact of using digital media to communicate with an audience. They began hosting workshops and seminars in the area. In 1998, the SFDMC moved to the University of California at Berkeley's School of Education, where it evolved into the Center for Digital Storytelling. The CDS blossomed and started teaching educational organizations across the United States about integrating digital storytelling technology into the K-12 classroom.

Key Features: PowerPoint

With PowerPoint there are several ways that you can make a digital story. By uploading pictures from either your own computer, camera, online or even Clipart that comes with PowerPoint you can include pictures for your story. There will be different setups of the slides including different designs and colors which you can create as the background. With fonts you can write out your story the way you want to and according to your personal taste. Shapes such as boxes and arrows can also be added to enhance in your story. Audio is a special feature of PowerPoint as well. You can record your voice during the story and add music or sounds that you have downloaded to your computer.

Key Features: Photo Story 3

Photo Story 3 is a user-friendly program that allows you to create a story using the digital photographs of your choice. These can be personal pictures uploaded from your digital camera or from the internet. Photo Story 3 allows you to edit your photos quickly. With a click of a button you can add special effects, subtitles, and audio. You can also edit your stories by adjusting the speed and transition effects of the slides. The audio feature includes music as well as recorded sounds and voice. This program also allows you to edit the quality of the photo including the color and size, as well as eliminating the red eye affect.

Educational Value

Digital storytelling is a unique and intriguing way to engage students. It can be accomplished using programs such as Microsoft Photo Story 3, PowerPoint, and Windows Movie Maker. These programs can be a useful aid when teaching about virtually any subject. This teaching tool will be able to reach all three types of learners in your classroom (audio, visual, and kinesthetic). Students will find that it is a fun way to express themselves and have information presented to them. You, as a teacher, will find that it is a fun and useful tool as well.

As a teacher, you can adjust the presentation to appropriately fit any age level. For example, for an elementary science class that is learning about the life cycle of a monarch butterfly, a presentation can be made using your own photos or others' displaying its different stages. For a high school-level biology class, a presentation of photos can be made explaining about how to properly dissect a fetal pig.

From a student's perspective, digital storytelling is a means of creative expression to reflect what he or she has learned. For example, students in a beginning-level modern language class could create their own digital story using personal photos and present it in the given modern language.

This program is valuable in every classroom, to teachers and students alike.
<font face="Garamond" In order to help students analyze the relationship between character and the plot aspect of setting in literary texts (Standard E1-1.4), I could assign students a project in which they create additional characters for the novel Great Expectations and use digital storytelling to place the characters in various settings of the novel and illustrate how the new characters would respond to the different settings.
2. In order to help students analyze the effect of an author's use of imagery and tone in literary texts (Standard E1-1.5), I could assign students a project in which they use digital story telling to illustrate poems. The students could tell the "story" of a poem by using pictures obtained through research or taken with a digital camera. They could add captions to the pictures and even add music to set the tone for the story.
3. In order to teach students how to decide when to use Standard English and when to use vernacular English (Standard E1-4.4), I could create a digital story. I could create scenes in which using Standard English is appropriate and scenes in which using vernacular English is appropriate. Parts of speech could be characters in the story, and rules of grammar could be illustrated with pictures.

As an educator, how will you teach/promote digital citizenship in your classroom?

Digital Citizenship

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

Pod Cast

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

Wiki

The WIKI Wiki (content origination: https://wiki.asu.edu/innovationsf06tth1100)
Contributors: Teresa Foulger, Lisa Harris

  History Behind the WIKI
Ward Cunningham started developing WikiWikiWeb in 1994 and later installed in on his company's website on March 25, 1995 as a way for programmars to share information. Wiki is the Hawaiian word for quick. Cunningham was referring to the quickness with which a wiki can be edited. Wiki is also interpreted as "what I know is" but this is a "backronym."

According to Cunningham, the use of wiki can be traced back to a HyperCard stack he wrote in the late 1980s. This potential inspired the founders of the Nupedia encyclopedia project, Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, to use wiki technology as a basis for an electronic encyclopedia: Wikipedia was launched in January 2001.

  Main Characteristics and Features
Users can:

Read and navigate through pages like a regular web site.

Modify any page (that is open to edit) by clicking the "Edit" link on that page. Click "Save" and your changes are INSTANTLY published for others to see.

Watch Wikis in Plain English, or See How It Works for more information

Features:

A wiki allows documents to be written collaboratively. This is done by allowing multiple people to contribute to the wiki via the internet or via hyperlinks.

Wikis remain up to date due to their pages being updated with ease through the collaborative process. Updates are almost instantanious.

Most wikis are open to the general public, while others require a user name and password to view and alter its contents.

When page changes have been made, there is a email sent of notification for any members who have request as such.

Changes to wikis are documented, and an author can revert to an older version, thus eliminating the need for control!

  Two Popular Wikis

  wikiHow

  Wikipedia

Things to Remember About Wiki Content (and things to teach kids about!)

Not all wiki's have accurate information.

Only secure wiki's have more reliable information.

Other sources should be used to confirm information found on a wiki.

  General Wiki Uses
This ease of interaction and operation makes a wiki an effective tool for collaborative authoring.

To share documents with anyone on your server or over the net.

In business settings for file sharing and other helpful hints for coworkers.

In the classroom for students to work collaboratively on projects.

For teachers to share lesson plans, activities, ideas and much more.

  <a class="external" href="http://sprouseinnovations.wetpaint.comhttp://www.socialtext.net/medialiteracy/index.cgi?uses_for_wikis"
