Social Bookmarking Definition Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to share, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web resources. Unlike file sharing, the resources themselves aren't shared, merely bookmarks that reference them. In a social bookmarking system, users save links to web pages that they want to remember and/or share. These bookmarks are usually public, and can be saved privately, shared only with specified people or groups, shared only inside certain networks, or another combination of public and private domains. The allowed people can usually view these bookmarks chronologically, by category or tags, or via a search engine.FeaturesThe social bookmarking system has several advantages to it over the traditional search engine or a wiki. The people who use and create the Internet resources for the tags are human beings who know what they are doing and talking about when it comes to giving the information. This way the sources are reliable rather than in something like Wikipedia where anyone can go in to edit. The allowed people can view these bookmarks in chronological order, in specific categories, or with a search engine and can also view any shared bookmarks with other users. Also, the social bookmarking system can give a rank to a resource based on how many times it has been bookmarked/saved by users in order to help decide which information is better. HistorySocial bookmarking was first seen in 1996 when itLists.com was the first site to use the concept of shared bookmarking followed by other companies such as Backflip, Blink, Clip2, Hotlinks and Quiver. These companies however failed to make an impact on the market due to the dot com crash of 2001. We then had to wait until 2003 when del.icio.us launched its own tag related social bookmarking Education Advantages - Gives students reliable resources to choose from.- Has links and information in a chronological order for easy access.- Any student is able to pick, organize, and share websites. - Teachers and students are able to collaborate on projects with other schools, students, and teachers sharing the bookmarks between participating communities of users.
