Photo Editing and Sharing Definition: An image editing application that is specialized for managing photos from digital cameras. It is used to crop and touch up photos, as well as organize them into albums and slide shows. Photo editors typically do not have the myriad filters and features of a full-blown image editor such as Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. However, they include a basic set of tools that is sufficient for most consumers.

History of Photo Editing and Sharing: Photo editing started out with just a traditional retouching. Before computers, retouching was done with paint or ink. The first recorded case ofphoto editing is from the 1860s. It was a photo with Abraham Lincoln's head on John C. Calhoun's body. This picture was the basis for the original five dollar bill. In the 1980s, Quantel computers was the first to come out with a digital photo editing program, Paintbox.
Key Features: 1. Selection- One is able to edit a certain part of a picture without editing the entire picture. 2. Layers- 3. Image Size Alteration- Often referred to as image scaling, the editor is able to change the size of a picture by making it smaller or larger 4. Cropping an Image- Creates a new image, the editor can select a portion of a picture and the rest is discarded. 5. Histogram- The editor can take an image and make an image histogram. The pixels an image contains (vertical axis) and the brightness value (horizontal axis) make up the histogram. This will allow the editor to adjust the brightness of each pixel. 6. Noise reduction- Allows the editor to create a clearer image, an example is when an image is taken in a low light setting. 7. Removal of Unwanted Elements- The editor can remove objects that take away from the main focus of the picture. 8. Selective Color Change- The editor can change the color of a specific object in a picture. 9. Image Orientation- The image can be rotated, mirrored, flipped, flopped, etc. 10. Perspective Correction and Distortion- Changes the shape of an image that was taken at a weird angle. 11. Lens Correction- The editor can edit an image using several lens distortions. Example: fisheye. 12.Sharpening and Softening Images- One can sharpen an image or blur it. 13. Special Effects- Depending on the software being used, there is usually a variety of special effects that can be added to an image to create unusual results.
Educational Value: 1. Digital Storytelling: Words can be added to an image. 2. Students can edit photos for the school yearbook. 3. English students who are writing short stories can add a creative picture. 4. Elementary students can create their own photobook. 5. Students can edit photos for their school website. 6. When students are learning to write letters, they can create a postcard. 7. Students can add captions to their photos that will help improve grammar and sentence structure. 8. Students can edit a photo of themselves and learn the importance of using a professional photo on a resume.

Paint.net
1. Definition - Paint.net is a free photo editing system that runs on windows programs and has many effects and special features to enhance photos.
2. Brief History - It started as a Washington State University senior design project and is now kept up by the alumni that originally worked on it. It was originally designed to replace the paint that is on every windows computer now.
3. Key features - The site is set up so the user can learn it very easily. It uses tab document interface, which the program uses a live active thumbnail (smaller version of your picture) in the window.
4. Educational value - Paint.net can be used to edit photos and create their own pictures to express what they see in what they are analyzing. For example, to make pictures from what they imagine in the books they are reading.

Picasa is another free photo editing website. It is accessed through google, and has many of the same features as picnik. The layout is slightly different, but the alteration process is very much the same. Picasa can be found by typing "Picasa" into the Google search bar, or going to:

An English class, for example, could use the software to alter an image as a way of creating a book cover, book to movie poster, or making themselves look somewhat like a character from a book or a different time period. Pictures can have so many alterations done that the possibilities are many.
