  • Cell Phone - a mobile telephone system using low-powered radio transmitters, with each transmitter covering a distinct geographical area (cell), and computer equipment to switch a call from one area to another, thus enabling large-scale car or portable phone service.

  • IPOD- a palm-sized, electronic device primarily created to play music. Unlike a traditional Walkman or portable CD-player, the iPod is capable of storing a large number of tracks and playing for many, many hours on a single battery charge.

History of Cell Phone: In 1973 - Dr. Melvin Cooper set up a base station in New York with the first working prototype of a cellular telephone, the Motorola Dyna-Tac. Mr. Cooper and Motorola took the phone technology to New York to show the public. In 1979 cell phones go public. Public cell phone testing began. The city of Chicago was where the first trials began with 2000 customers, and eventually other cell phone trials appeared in the Washington D.C. and Baltimore area. Japan began testing cellular phone service in 1979. The first PDA/Phone combination was produced by BellSouth/IBM in 1992. The first touch screen phone was the the Ericsson R380 in 2000. It had a black and white touch screen and it featured a new flip design. The first colored phones were produced in 2002. Between 2000-2005 features suck as: GPS, web browsing, full screens, sliders, picture capabilities, video, interchangeable skins, and full Internet capabilities. Also, the Blackberry, that was invented in 2004, became the tool of choice for businesses and business people everywhere. Today cell phones come in every shape and size. From simple candy bar shaped and flip phones to Blackberries and Netbooks, it seems that no one functions without some form of cellular device.

History of IPOD:In 2000, digital music players were either big and clunky or small and useless with equally terrible user interfaces. Apple (Steve Jobs) saw the opportunity and announced the release of the iPod, their first portable music player on October 23, 2001. People's reaction to the Ipod at first was not so great. Their biggest complaint was the $400 price tag. Consumers also complained about the wheel design. It was something, in 2001, that people were not use to using for browsing. Today the wheel design is a common design. Today there are several types of Ipods including: Video Ipod, Ipod Mini, Ipod Touch, Ipod Shuffle, and the Iphone.

Educational Value:
Cell Phones:
Cell phones give the students access to information at the palm of their hands. They no longer need to travel to the computer lab, take turns at the classroom computer, or go to the public library to gather information. Cell phones make it easier for both the teacher and the student. Cell phones can engage and enthuse students in their learning. The students can understand the value of technology and feel comfortable in using it to learn.

Ideas for teachers:
  1. Group work - the students could work together using their cell phones to collect video clips on ways to be more environmentally friendly.
  2. For students with autism - the teacher can use the cell phone to allow the students to listen to music to calm them down. The teacher can also use the music as a reward for the students finishing their work.
  3. Individual work - the students will use their cell phones and headphones for this activity. The teacher could text the students a link to watch and pass out a worksheet with questions. She could have the students watch the video and answer the questions on the worksheet.

Ipod:
  1. 1. Apps with educational games
  2. 2. Be able to listen to music and podcasts that are related to curriculum--may help with memorization
