The term "digital storytelling" arises from a movement that uses new digital tools to assist individuals to express their life experiences in an emotionally engaging manner. Digital stories typically assume the form of short stories approximately eight minutes or less and usually involve interaction with the audience. The term also refers to the variety of emergent forms of digital narratives such as web-based stories, interactive stories, hypertexts, and narrative computer games. Digital stories are widely respected for their emphasis on personal voice and facilitative teaching methods.A Brief History:
The Center for Digital Storytelling (CDS) was founded in the early 1990's in San Francisco Bay, California. Dana Atchely, a media producer and artist, created a multimedia autobiography. He collaborated with Joe Lambert and Nina Mullen, and together they formed the San Francisco Digital Media Center (SFDMC). Together they realized the importance and impact of using digital media to communicate with an audience. They began hosting workshops and seminars in the area. In 1998, the SFDMC moved to the University of California at Berkeley's School of Education, where it evolved into the Center for Digital Storytelling. The CDS blossomed and started teaching educational organizations across the United States about integrating digital storytelling technology into the K-12 classroom.Key Features: PowerPoint

Educational Value
Digital storytelling is a unique and intriguing way to engage students. It can be accomplished using programs such as Microsoft Photo Story 3, PowerPoint, and Windows Movie Maker. These programs can be a useful aid when teaching about virtually any subject. This teaching tool will be able to reach all three types of learners in your classroom (audio, visual, and kinesthetic). Students will find that it is a fun way to express themselves and have information presented to them. You, as a teacher, will find that it is a fun and useful tool as well.
As a teacher, you can adjust the presentation to appropriately fit any age level. For example, for an elementary science class that is learning about the life cycle of a monarch butterfly, a presentation can be made using your own photos or others' displaying its different stages. For a high school-level biology class, a presentation of photos can be made explaining about how to properly dissect a fetal pig.
From a student's perspective, digital storytelling is a means of creative expression to reflect what he or she has learned. For example, students in a beginning-level modern language class could create their own digital story using personal photos and present it in the given modern language.
This program is valuable in every classroom, to teachers and students alike.
