Definition:

Tag Clouds are a set of related words. Each cloud contains between 30 to 150 tags, or words. The different font sizes represent the importance of the word, as well as its quantity. Other visual cues, such as color, may be used to represent the different weights of the words. Tag Clouds are able to represent more weights than other forms of measure. Histogram or pie charts can only represent an average of 12 weights. Tags within the cloud may also be hyperlinks that will open to more information.

Brief History:

Tag Clouds began to grow in popularity after being used on Flickr. Tag clouds were created by the co-founder of Flickr, Stewart Butterfield. Other websites such as Del.icio.us have also promoted them. Tag Clouds were first published in Microserfs, a novel by Douglas Coupland. This novel was written in the early 1990s about technology and its future. Tag Clouds are now used as navigation tools for many websites.
